On November 18, 1988, Congress set aside 40 miles of the San Pedro River, north from the international boundary of the US and Mexico in Arizona, as a National Conservation Area (NCA). The primary purpose for this designation is to protect and enhance the desert riparian ecosystem, a rare remnant of what was once an extensive network of similar riparian systems throughout the Southwest.
